Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams is expected to generate a lot of trade buzz during the 2024 MLB Winter Meetings. Entering his final season of team control, Williams is projected to earn $7.7 million in arbitration, according to MLB Trade Rumors. Another potential trade candidate is starting pitcher Aaron Civale, who is also in his last year of team control with a projected 2025 salary of $8.0 million.
Why would the Milwaukee Brewers want to trade Devin Williams and Aaron Civale?
Devin Williams has more trade value than a typical rental player
MLB organizations that feel as if they are an elite closer away from taking their team to the next level should heavily consider trading for Devin Williams during the off-season. The reason for this is because if he is dealt before the start of the 2025 season, the acquiring organization could extend him a qualifying offer and receive draft pick compensation in return if he signs elsewhere in free agency. If Williams is traded mid-season he would not be eligible for a qualifying offer.
Could Devin Williams and Aaron Civale be packaged together in a deal?
The idea of trading Devin Williams and Aaron Civale together as a package deal should be a serious consideration. Given the current MLB market, any team acquiring both would be getting an exceptional financial bargain, with their combined salaries totaling around $16 million. Furthermore, packaging Williams and Civale could allow the Brewers to make a larger move, such as at minimum receiving Alec Bohm from the Philadelphia Phillies in return.
