The Milwaukee Brewers are hoping to retain manager Craig Counsell this offseason. He is a soon to be sought after free agent and prior to his contract with the Brew Crew expiring, which is later this week, the New York Mets and Cleveland Guardians asked and received permission to interview him. Now a report is surfacing that he has received one contract offer.
Milwaukee Brewers: Craig Counsell has received one contract offer (report).
There is a lot of speculation that Craig Counsell has his sights on setting a new standard of pay among baseball managers. Last year he was paid $3.50 MM from the Brewers. The teams he is interviewing with have historically paid their skippers well in which Buck Showalter previously made $3.75 MM with the Mets in 2023 and Terry Francona $4.50 MM with the Guardians.
According to a recent article from the New York Post Craig Counsell did receive a contract offer from the Milwaukee Brewers shortly after the conclusion of the season. Jon Heyman and Mike Puma did not provide any details in regards to average annual value or length.
Seeing how Craig Counsell is currently employed by the Brewers, for a few more days anyway, it should not be shocking that they made the first contract offer. It is also not shocking that Craig Counsell is sitting on this information and taking the time to hear what other organizations have to offer.
Once Craig Counsell is done interviewing with other teams he will have the option to come back to the Brewers and utilize other offers as leverage. If Milwaukee is serious about retaining him they will propose a rebuttal and modify their original contract offer. It will be interesting to see what the Mets and Guardians offer Craig Counsell and if he uses any of their offers to his advantage.
