The Milwaukee Brewers lost their MLB shortstop Willy Adames in free agency this off-season. This void is expected to be filled by the likes of Joey Ortiz, Brice Turang, and Caleb Durbin. While they are great defenders, evidenced by Turang winning a platinum glove award as a second baseman, one of the organization’s shortstops was recently ranked among the the top defensive prospects in the game.
Milwaukee Brewers shortstop ranked among the top defensive prospects
According to a poll conducted by MLB Pipeline, executives ranked the Brewers second overall prospect Cooper Pratt as one of the best defenders in the game. Pratt, who stands a 6’4″ and is just 20 years old, received 4.2% of votes. Shortstop Carson Williams of the Tampa Bay Rays ran away with the award as he received 45.8% of the votes, but everyone else received 10% or lower.

Cooper Pratt won a gold glove award in 2024
Last season, Cooper Pratt’s first full minor league season, resulted in him being recognized with a gold glove award. The sure-handed defender committed just one error over 22 games following a late season promotion to High-A. Overall he finished the season with a .976 fielding percentage, was a part of 51 double plays, and he had just eight errors over 730 innings at shortstop.

What’s next for Cooper Pratt?
Following a successful 2024 season, both defensively and at the plate where he slashed .277/.362/.406, is likely a trip to Double-A. The 2023 sixth round pick, who actually was projected to be a first round talent, showed the ability to potentially be a fast riser in the minor leagues, but another full season of developing and learning is what is in store for 2025. Hopefully he can build upon the success he had last year and show that he is ready to compete for a big league spot, potentially as soon as 2026.
