The Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners are currently in the middle of a three game series at T-Mobile park. Despite being opponents, the Brew Crew’s front office has elected to claim right-handed relief pitcher J.B. Bukauskas off waivers from them. Luis Urias was transferred to the 60-day IL in correspondence.

Milwaukee Brewers claim J.B. Bukauskas off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.
J.B. Bakauskas, a former 15th overall pick by the Houston Astros in the 2017 MLB draft, was designated for assignment by the Mariners last week. In the past, he was involved in a trade to the Arizona Diamondbacks at the 2019 deadline that brought Zach Greinke to Houston. With Arizona he battled injuries, got a brief shot at MLB playing time, and was eventually let go this last offseason in which Seattle then picked him up.
Career numbers wise Bakauskas has a 4.00 ERA in the minor leagues and 202 innings pitched. Coming out of North Carolina he was primarily used as a starter through the 2019 season, but has since been a relief pitcher. In the Major Leagues he has just 18.1 innings pitched and a 7.85 ERA.
On the mound, baseball savant has his 2023 fastball velocity at 94 MPH, slider at 84 MPH, and changeup at 88.5 MPH. He does have one minor league option remaining, so he can be shuttled between the Major and Minor leagues this season. To begin with the Brewers have assigned him to Triple-A Nashville.
It will be interesting to see if J.B. Bakauskas can carve out a role on the Milwaukee Brewers or not. For now it is a low risk move in claiming a former highly regarded top pitching prospect coming out of college.
