The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Chicago Cubs 8-4 on Monday night in what was an intense atmosphere in front of a sellout crowd of over 41,000 fans. After Jacob Misiorowski gave up three runs and threw 40 pitches in the first inning, he settled down to retire the next 10 batters he faced. He only made it through four innings, but he limited the damage and struck out seven. The bullpen took care of the rest.
Offensively, the Brewers had been in a slump. 4-3 in their last seven games going into Monday, Milwaukee had hit just three home runs in that span.
They hit three on Monday, including solo shots by Sal Frelick and Andrew Vaughn. But the biggest blast of the night, perhaps, came from three-time All-Star Christian Yelich.
Milwaukee Brewers DH Christian Yelich Has a 20-Home Run Season for the First Time Since 2019

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Milwaukee had a 6-4 lead over Chicago in their highly anticipated matchup. But, as is the case whenever the two teams play, no lead is safe. The Brewers proved this to be the case after falling behind 3-0, only to score four runs in the third inning to pull ahead.
It was with great relief to fans, then, that Yelich blasted a two-run home run to right-center field to extend the lead to 8-4. The home run, his first since July 11, was also his 20th of the season, not an insignificant milestone for the 2018 NL MVP.
As fans remember well, Yelich was one of the premier power hitters in the National League during his first two seasons with the team. He hit .326/.402/.598 with 36 home runs and 110 RBI to take home the league MVP Award. The following year, he hit .329/.429/.671 with 44 home runs and 97 RBI and was in the thick of the MVP race again, but shattered his knee cap after fouling off a pitch.
What followed were several tumultuous seasons that saw Yelich struggle to return to form. From 2020-2023, he hit .254/.362/.407 with 52 total home runs.
Last year, Yelich made his third career All-Star team, and was even voted as a starter, after hitting .315/.406/.504 with 11 home runs, 42 RBI, and 21 stolen bases in 75 games. Unfortunately, a lingering back injury required surgery and his season ended early.
This year, Yelich is hitting .258/.333/.447, which does not live up to the standard he set in his early days with Milwaukee. But he is healthy, and he is hitting with power.
His home run against the Cubs marked the first time since 2019 that he reached 20 in a season.

After the game, Yelich was asked about how it felt to reach 20 home runs for the first time since 2019. His previous high after that particular season was when he hit 19 in 2023 (when he also hit a respectable .278/.370/.447 in 144 games).

“It’s always cool [to get to 20 home runs],” Yelich said. “It’s probably been a little too long, but it was nice to get there and it is still a long season.”
The Brewers are now 63-43, lead the Cubs by one game in the National League Central Division, and have the best record in all Major League Baseball.
Hopefully Yelich will be able to put together a good two-month stretch to end the season and lead the Brewers to a high seed in the MLB Playoffs.
