Milwaukee Brewers southpaw Bryan Hudson has been a pleasant surprise for the team this year. He was acquired via trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers this off-season after he was designated for assignment in order to make room for Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the 40-man roster. This year he has earned a high-leverage role, has a 1.73 season ERA, but was optioned to the Minor Leagues.
Pat Murphy explains why Bryan Hudson was optioned to the Minor Leagues.
After the Brewers announced that Bryan Hudson was being optioned to the Minor Leagues Pat Murphy spoke with the media about the decision. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Curt Hogg indicated that Murphy said, “We haven’t exactly liked everything we’ve seen about how the ball’s coming out and how he’s responding and that type of thing.” Hogg also pointed out that Murphy believed that Hudson has exceeded his previous innings totals and time off will be included in Triple-A.
What were the Milwaukee Brewers seeing that was concerning enough to send Bryan Hudson down to Triple-A?
As mentioned above Pat Murphy was not pleased with things they were seeing from Hudson that includes how the ball’s coming out. This sounds like Murphy was referencing to something mechanical. Looking further Adam McCalvy, MLB.com reporter, pointed out that Hudson’s fastball velocity has dropped from near 92 MPH at the start of the season to at or below 90 MPH most recently.

What was Bryan Hudson’s previous maximum innings thrown in a single season?
Per Pat Murphy rest will be included as a part of Hudson being optioned to the Minor Leagues. Since the lost 2020 Minor League season Bryan Hudson had previously pitched a maximum of 59 innings. Pre pandemic he was built up like a starting pitcher and had worked 100+ innings on multiple occasions. This year he is at 62.1 big league innings and 3.0 Minor League innings.
With how good Bryan Hudson has been this year we likely will see him again at some point. Even with decreased velocity he has been effective out of the bullpen, so unless an injury becomes known expect him back and rested at some point before the post-season.
