The Milwaukee Brewers had perhaps their most interesting approach to a trade deadline in recent memory. They did not make any splashy moves, as overall they added catcher Danny Jansen, outfielder Brandon Lockridge, and a pair of injured pitchers in reliever Shelby Miller and starter Jordan Montgomery.
What are the Milwaukee Brewers plans for their new additions?

With Eric Haase off the 40-man roster and prospect Jeferson Quero injured, Jansen is in line to serve as the backup to William Contreras the remainder of the season. Haase had been occupying that role previously, although he was rarely used as Contreras plays nearly every day, despite battling through a fractured finger almost all of this season.
Lockridge is a very fast outfielder and will provide depth the remainder of the season. He will see immediate time in the big leagues as Jackson Chourio appears to be heading to the injured list due to his hamstring. It is unlikely that he carves out a large role the remainder of the season, but the health of the current core could easily change that.
Lastly, both Miller and Montgomery are both injured. Miller is nearing a return for a flexor tendon strain whereas Montgomery underwent surgery earlier this year. Miller will be a high leverage relief option once healthy whereas Montgomery won’t throw a pitch for the Brewers.
Milwaukee executed this trade in order to acquire Miller, while only having to chip in $2.0 million towards Montgomery’s remaining contract. It was a unique way to acquire a reliever, who at this years deadline bullpen arms where going for premium prospects, but the Brewers sacrificed a little cash instead.
Bryan Hudson and Elvis Peguero were trade deadline roster causalities

With the additions of all these new players, room on the 40-man roster had to be made. As mentioned, Haase was previously DFA’d to make room for Jansen. Nestor Cortes was traded for Lockridge, so that was a 40-man roster player swap. However, two spots were needed for Miller and Montgomery, and Bryan Hudson and Elvis Peguero were the two unlucky players chosen to be be DFA’d.

Hudson emerged as a surprise high-leverage arm a season ago for the Brewers, but lost velocity down the stretch, and has struggled this year. Peguero had been a key bullpen arm since 2023, but similarly was not getting results this year.
