Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff is three MLB games back into his return from shoulder surgery performed in the Fall of 2023. His most recent outing came against the Seattle Mariners, he looked sharp, threw six scoreless innings, and was removed after just 62 pitches. According to manager Pat Murphy, this cautious approach is intentional, and one he plans to maintain as Woodruff continues to ease back into full workload.
Pat Murphy will use a cautious approach with Brandon Woodruff’s work load

Woodruff opened his start against the Mariners with a remarkably efficient four-pitch first inning. He followed that with innings of 12, 15, 10, 8, and 13 pitches, totaling just 62 on the night. Under normal circumstances, a pitcher that efficient would likely continue deeper into the game. However, given Murphy’s plan to monitor his work load coming back from a tricky shoulder surgery, and reports of some cramping during the outing, the Brewers opted to play it safe and pulled him early.
Brandon Woodruff is not the only Milwaukee Brewers pitcher whose work load will be monitored

Per Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, going forward, rookie sensation Jacob Misiorowski will also have his work load monitored. Misiorowski had a 91 pitch outing before the All-Star break, which was the highest number of pitches he had thrown in a big league game so far.
Additionally, Misiorowski has thrown 89.0 innings this year between the major and minor leagues. The most innings he has thrown in a season so far is 97.1. Keeping his arm fresh for the post season will be a priority for the Brewers the rest of the way.
Managing both Woodruff and Misiorowski the rest of the way will be wise as the Brewers will want both to be healthy, effective, and ready to contribute when it matters most. Thankfully, Milwaukee has a surplus of pitching, so continued piggy back starts with players like DL Hall, Aaron Ashby, and potentially even Nestor Cortes, when healthy, is a strategy that should continue.
