Milwaukee Brewers: Brandon Woodruff Says Thrilling End to 3-2 Victory Over Mets Was “Meant to Be”

Ever since making his long-awaited return from a shoulder injury that cost him nearly two seasons, Milwaukee Brewers two-time All-Star Brandon Woodruff has been nothing short of amazing every time he takes the mound. He impressed yet again on Friday night, throwing seven full innings for the first time since he threw a complete game shutout on September 11, 2023.

After allowing two solo home runs early, Woodruff made some adjustments and shut the New York Mets down for the rest of the night. He ended up allowing just three hits, two runs, and two walks while recording eight strikeouts.

Woodruff improved to 4-0 on the season and currently sports an impressive 2.29 ERA in his six starts since returning.

For the better part of the last two-and-a-half months, the Brewers have found ways to win in some of the most unconventional ways. That trend continued on Friday night as they scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning despite having just one hit in the frame.

Brice Turang smashed a two-run home run to right centerfield after Blake Perkins reached on an error. The blast tied the game, and was followed by Milwaukee hitters reaching via walk, catcher’s interference, and another walk. Then, with two strikes and two outs, Isaac Collins drove in the third run of the inning after getting hit by a pitch.

The lead held for the rest of the game, but New York made some noise in the ninth inning off of All-Star closer Trevor Megill. Starlin Marte hit a two out double, and was waved home a batter later when Jeff McNeil laced a single to centerfield.

However, Perkins threw a perfect throw home in time to cut down the runner and end the game.

When meeting with reporters after the game, Woodruff talked about how great he has been feeling on the mound, and that he never really minds the home run ball (as long as they are solo shots) because it means that he is throwing strikes.

When asked about Perkins’ throw home, Woodruff lit up and described his own emotions in that moment:

“Oh my God, that was unbelievable. I was running up and down the hall after they made it. I mean, it was just incredible. I mean, obviously, what happened to us last year when they [the Mets] came in here and beat us in the playoffs, and how this kind of first game [against them this year] kind of played out, it was like it was kind of meant to be.”

New York defeated Milwaukee in the playoffs last season when former Brewers closer Devin Williams gave up a go-ahead home run to Mets first baseman Pete Alonso in the ninth inning of the deciding game.
