The Green Bay Packers, like all other NFL teams, have been unable to host team workouts due to the COVID-19 situation. The inability to gather as a team makes it easy for players to slack off. That does not seem to be the case, however, for Rashan Gary. Gary was selected by the Packers with the 12th overall pick in the 2019 draft. To say he did not play like an early first round pick would be an understatement.
Many fans were critical of the pick due to Gary’s injury history in college. In addition, the Packers added the notorious “Smith Brothers” in free agency. It did not seem like there would be much room for Gary. The Packers’ number one draft choice only played 24% of the the defensive snaps last season, recording two sacks and 21 tackles.
Gary, though, is not satisfied with his production. While he could use the pandemic as an excuse to take it easy, his Twitter account shows that he is not. According to the videos he has posted, Gary has spent a lot of time doing intense workouts in order to improve his production. This dedication has caught the coaching staff’s attention, especially that of Mike Pettine:
Having good edge rushers is a priority for any team in the NFL. One team can never have too many guys to force the quarterback out of the pocket. It appears that Gary knows what needs to be done and that he is taking the initiative in doing it. Even without coaches present, the former first round pick is working to make sure he was worthy of that selection. This is the true spirit of the Green Bay Packers.
