It isn’t a leap to suggest that rookies Matthew Golden and Savion Williams represent the future at wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers.
Especially given that Golden arrives as a heralded first-round selection bringing blazing 4.29 speed to quarterback Jordan Love’s arsenal, and the Packers’ seem committed to identifying young receivers to build the passing game around.
As a heated competition for roster spots, starting jobs, and targets from Love loom large for a suddenly wide-open receiving corps, Golden will likely be the focal point of training camp but Williams and his potential climb up the depth chart could be a fascinating storyline to watch this summer.

There’s a real possibility that Golden could battle Packers receiver Romeo Doubs for the top job this summer, but even the former University of Texas standout isn’t writing off Williams’ chances of drawing major targets as a rookie.
“Me and Savion go way back,” Golden told reporters during Packers rookie minicamp earlier this spring. “To have somebody that I know, we’re going to push each other eacn and every day.”
Williams lands as a potential possession receiver in the Packers’ offense, after producing a team-high 573 receiving yards and four touchdowns at TCU.
“He can play inside, and out,” Golden said of Williams. “That’s something I can do, too, so it’s going to be fun seeing what we do on offense. I’m ready to compete with those guys, go out, and have fun.”
The friendly competition between fellow rookies only serves to bolster the Packers’ receiving corps, Love’s upside, and the offense’s potential this season.
“I’m going to be holding him accountable,” Golden said of Williams. “And he’s holding me accountable.”
