The Green Bay Packers have high hopes for Matthew Golden, and there is a legitimate chance that when Week 1 arrives, the first-round rookie wide receiver will be sitting atop the depth chart.
Adding potentially game-altering speed to an explosive offense that has quality depth at wide receiver but lacks star power could be the missing piece for quarterback Jordan Love and the Packers.
Packers’ Matthew Golden Must Overcome Drops
However, if Love’s speed is going to make the kind of impact the Packers hope, as NFL Media’s Dan Parr points out, Love is going to need to cut down on dropped passes which weren’t just an issue for him but plagued Green Bay receivers in 2024.
“The Packers will be counting on Golden to limit the focus drops that were occasionally an issue for him in college,” Parr writes, listing Golden as Green Bay’s most pivotal rookie. “But he could quickly emerge in a receiving corps that hasn’t had a 1,000-yard pass catcher since Davante Adams’ final season with the team (2021).”

Green Bay has to be encouraged both by early returns from a strong training camp from Golden but the fact that he was only charged with four dropped passes last season at Texas after struggling to hold onto the ball during his first two seasons at the University of Houston.
If Golden’s speed takes the top off opposing defenses and he builds a strong connection with Love early in the season, the Packers’ offense has the potential to be prolific.
