Putting the ball on the hoop is Kam Jones’ primary job for the Marquette Golden Eagles but on New Year’s eve during their visit and win against the Providence Friars, his role slightly changed into an assist-man.
Jones was still the top scorer for the team with his 18 points but he had almost everybody involved by dishing out 10 dimes on the night.
It was the third time this season that the senior shooting guard broke into double digit assists.
Fans should not be surprised though as according to Jones, he is not playing differently this season to achieve those stats.
“Honestly, I would say I’m making the same plays I been making. I just have the ball a lot more,” he told reporters post-game.
“And my teammates are ready to shoot. It’s the same reads, every night and every game. Teams have different schemes to try to guard you. But basketball is a complex game and also very simple.”
Offense was spread out for the Golden Eagles when they recorded their first win at Providence since February 2019.
Three other players scored in double digits led by Stevie Mitchell who had 14. David Joplin and substitute Zaide Lowery had 11 each.
Kam Jones continues to improve
Jones, who was recently blessed as the Greatest Golden Eagles, may say that he always had a passing game but analysts are taking notice. His game is evolving.
It is not just his passing but also his leadership as he becomes the main guy for Marquette with the departure of Tyler Kolek and Oso Ighodaro for the NBA.
CBS Sports writer Kyle Boone said this improve could lead him to getting drafted in the first round this 2025.
“Jones has been one of the most productive players in college basketball this season as a senior and taken his game to a new level for Marquette as a shooter while soaking up a major role as a passer. His new role has unlocked previously-unrealized potential when he played next to Tyler Kolek,” Boone said.
