The Marquette Golden Eagles were the 11th-ranked team in the country entering Tuesday’s matchup on the road against the St. John’s Red Storm, who is currently ranked 12th in the nation. This game was played at Madison Square Garden and the Red Storm were able to come out on top against the Golden Eagles by a final score of 70-64.

With the win for St. John’s, they improved to 20-3 overall and 11-1 in conference play. As for Marquette, they dropped to 18-5 overall on the season and 9-3 in league play. One of the biggest weak links for the Golden Eagles as of late has been Ben Gold.
Marquette Golden Eagles Fans Want Ben Gold Benched After Loss Against the St. John’s Red Storm

One of the reasons why Marquette lost against St. John’s on Tuesday was because of rebounding. Ben Gold was a major disappointment in the game for Marquette with two points, zero rebounds, and two assists. The fact that Gold didn’t have a single rebound in this game was not good.
Maybe head coach Shaka Smart will consider a lineup change for the team moving forward. Gold has been a primary starter this season for the Golden Eagles. This is what the Marquette Golden Eagles fanbase had to say about him after another loss in conference play:
Rebounding, rebounding, rebounding… If this team is going to go anywhere, Shaka needs to reconsider some of his recruiting efforts for this program to make the leap. Bench Gold, he’s worthless.

Time to rethink playing time. More Parham and Zaide, less Jop, no Ben.

2nd round exit at best. 0 rebounding and 0 consistency on offense. Can only do so much.

Start Lowery and Parham over Joplin and Gold. You’re welcome.

There is no question that head coach Shaka Smart may have to make some uncomfortable decisions with this basketball team at some point. It is possible that they may need to make some lineup changes moving forward, but would Smart move Ben Gold to the bench?
It remains to be seen what will happen in the next game on the road on Saturday against the Creighton Blue Jays. Marquette will have to win that game on the road against Creighton.
Game Stats

Three guys scored in double figures. Chase Ross scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and recorded two assists. Kam Jones scored 15 points, grabbed three rebounds, and recorded one assist. Zaide Lowrey scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds.
The Marquette Golden Eagles have to be better on the glass moving forward, especially Ben Gold. For now, there are probably no plans for him to be removed from the starting lineup even if fans clamor for head coach Shaka Smart to make a change after the disappointing St. John’s Red Storm performance.
