David Joplin scored just 11 points in Marquette Golden Eagles‘ win against Big East rivals Creighton Bluejays but he hit the biggest shot of the night.
The senior forward struggled in the game but he persisted and just continued playing his game that when the right moment arrived, he delivered.
Joplin hit a three point shot with 35 seconds remaining to ice the victory against a pesky Creighton.
Talking post-game, he said that his early struggle was not an issue and he just remained aggressive to be able to perform what they did in training.
“We kind of wanted to run something, but they were kind of giving us an opening,” he said.
“We play against zone all the time in practice, so I know dribbling, getting into the paint and kicking it back out, or doing it yourself – it kind of confuses the defense.”
David Joplin’s mom graced the event with her high notes
Joplin may have struggled but the night started and ended perfectly for him.
He hit the shot that buried the game while his mother opened the game with her singing.
His mother Lisa took center stage for the special Mom’s Night by Marquette and was tasked to sing the national anthem. Her performance was received well by the live audience.
David himself was impressed, too.
“We’re all really appreciative of how this program treats our moms,” Joplin said. “I know she was super nervous, but I just tried to give her some confidence, and I just told her, once you get in there and get the mic in your hands and just start. She’ll be fine. She was amazing.
“(That was) probably the last time I heard her sing – since church. So it was good to hear her. I was excited. I knew she was gonna kill it. It was cool.”
