To be the best, you need to beat the best. That’s what Marquette Golden Eagles women’s basketball team was not able to do against the UConn Huskies. They still have something to look forward to though – Skylar Forbes.
Marquette University hoops teams had different results in their respective games before the end of the year but supporters of the women’s team has Forbes to rave about.
The sophomore scored 20 points against the Huskies in a game where she was specially targeted by coach Geno Auriemma’s defensive game plan.
Forbes was the obvious bright spot in the 77-45 loss and her coach Cara Consuegra thinks she has what it takes to make it to the pro ranks.
This based on fact that she held her own against the a Huskies team with multiple players guaranteed to make the WNBA.
“It’s great when you see a player like Sky, who we believe will be a pro, go against a UConn roster where they have multiple pros and play as well or better. Quite frankly better,” Consuegra said. ”
“So I was really proud of her. Just for being in the moment and being ready for the moment. I thought she played with great composure. I thought she played with great poise.”
Skylar Forbes left Huskies coach impressed
It was the third time this season that Forbes scored at least 20 points.
Huskies coach Auriemma knew her high scoring game is not a fluke and that is something he carried coming into game.
The veteran coach said their game plan was to limit the Golden Eagles star’s touches.
“If you put somebody (on her) that’s not mobile, she’s going to cause problems out on the perimeter. And her footwork is really good inside.”
Forbes and the rest of the Golden Eagles will return to action on Sunday against another Big East rivals – Butler.
