It did not take the No. 5 Marquette basketball long to rebound from their frustrating 81-70 loss to the No. 6 Iowa State Cyclones in Ames last Wednesday.
On Saturday, Shaka Smart’s squad got the better of No. 11 Wisconsin Badgers in an 88-74 win at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles had four players scoring in double figures but there was clearly one of them who got most of the attention, and it was no other than Kam Jones.
The senior guard erupted for 32 points on 12-for-21 shooting from the field for Marquette basketball, who improved to 9-1 overall — the best start in a season for the Golden Eagles since Smart took over the coaching gig for the program in 2021.
Apart from Jones, David Joplin also scored in double digits with 13 points to his name while Chase Ross and Stevie Mitchell scored 12 points each for Marquette, which will take on the Dayton Flyers next Saturday on the road.
Marquette basketball star Kam Jones grabs attention in win over Wisconsin
Jones’ explosive performance in the Badgers game not only turned heads but also left many saying that he’s the best in the nation, at least in his position.
“”Right now, Kam Jones is in a classic with Johni Broome and Cooper Flagg as the three best players in college basketball this season. And I think Kam might be No. 1” said college basketball analyst Jeff Goodman.
“32 points kam jones is the best player in the nation. Thank you,” chimed in another a fan on X.
“I’m a Badger but Kam Jones is the best player in college basketball. I’ve seen Badger fans trying to slight em, serious coping,” an X user commented.
“Kam Jones is the best player in college basketball. Argue with a WALL,” read another comment.
From a different comment: “Shaka & Marquette snap their 3-game losing streak to Wisconsin. Head to Dayton next Saturday with a 9-1 record. Kam Jones continues to be the best player in College Basketball. Goes for 32 in the win. #MUBB”
So far in the 2024-25 college basketball season, Jones is averaging 19.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game. What’s also impressive about Jones is his efficiency on the floor.
The Golden Eagles can continue to feel good about giving him plenty of touches, as he is shooting a fantastic 58.8 percent from the field. And when he’s not scoring, he is also creating scoring opportunities for his teammates, as evidenced by his 42.6 percent assist rate — the best in the Big East conference and fifth-best in the nation.
