Following a thrilling five set victory on Friday night, LOVB Madison was unable to win their second match of a two game home stand at the Wisconsin Field House. LOVB Omaha outmatched them in four sets on Saturday night and advanced to 2-0. Madison dropped to 1-2 on the season as a result.
LOVB Madison won the first set
To begin the night, Madison’s offense was firing on all cylinders. They had control of the first set and were on their way to a blow out until Omaha rallied and scored some points late to make the first set final score of 25-20 look closer than what it felt. In that first set, Sarah Franklin had seven kills on 11 attempts and Claire Chaussee six kills on seven attempts.
Omaha gained momentum by winning the second set in extra points
The second set ended up being a crucial moment in the game as Omaha won in extra points 26-24. After that big swing in the game, they defeated Madison by scores of 25-15 in each of the next two sets. Kimberly Drewniok had a big game for Omaha as she was tied for the most kills in the game with 19 and Lauren Stivrins finished with a 70% kill efficiency as she got 14 kills on 20 attempts.
Players were not happy with the way the second set ended as Madison’s coach Matt Fuerbringer challenged that Omaha touched the ball. They initially ruled no block touch, but did not look at the entirety of the play as there was thought to be a touch in the back row. Officials then had to pause the game longer, go back and look at the play, and still ruled that no touch occurred.
LOVB Madison statistics
On the Madison side, Sarah Franklin led the team in kills for the second consecutive match with 19. Claire Chaussee was second with 16 and Temi Thomas-Ailara added 13. Setter Lauren Carlini posted 45 assists and 13 digs.
Madison will get a re-match with Omaha next Friday, with that game being played in Nebraska. Of note, standout college libero Lexi Rodriguez has not played in either of Omaha’s first two games.
