This offseason, the Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst signed safety Xavier McKinney to a four-year contract in free agency. McKinney played with the New York Giants last season and many Packers fans wondered how they even got him in the first place.
Xavier McKinney was one of this franchise’s best free-agent signings in a long time. He has been worth every penny for the Packers this season.
Green Bay Packers Safety Xavier McKinney Named A Starting Pro Bowl Safety
On Thursday morning, it was announced that McKinney was named as one of the starting safeties for the NFC in the upcoming Pro Bowl. He will be the starting free safety for the NFC and the starting strong safety in the NFC will be Budda Baker of the Arizona Cardinals. Brian Branch of the Detroit Lions is the other strong safety for the NFC.
McKinney this season with the Green Bay Packers has recorded 84 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, seven interceptions, and 10 pass deflections. Xavier McKinney recorded most of his interceptions at the beginning of the season. With the pace he was on earlier this season, there was a chance that McKinney would have 10 interceptions this season.
It would have been a travesty had McKinney not been named as a starting safety to the Pro Bowl in the NFC with the kind of season he had with them. He is one of the most important defensive players on this football team. Wes Hodklewicz, packers.com senior writer also added:
“McKinney has been voted a starter for the NFC following his seven-interception debut season in Green Bay.”
This is also the first time that he is going to a Pro Bowl. He never appeared in one with the New York Giants.
Other Players Who Made It
The other two players on the Packers roster who made it were Rashan Gary and Josh Jacobs. It was not a surprise to see Jacobs and McKinney make the team, but it was a surprise to see Gary make it.
Josh Jacobs was also a free-agent signing this offseason like McKinney. The free agent signings were the best thing Green Bay did this offseason and maybe they need to sign marquee free agents more often.
