The Green Bay Packers currently have the 23rd overall pick in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft. Of course, it has become customary for the Packers to be selecting late in the first round due to their perennial high level of success during the regular season. This has meant, though, that the players many fans would love to see taken by Green Bay are gone before the Packers are even on the clock.
In recent weeks, general manager Brian Gutekunst has seen his draft classes from 2020 and 2021 come under fire. Of the nine players Green Bay selected in 2020, only Jordan Love remains on the team. Of the nine players they selected in 2021, only Isaiah McDuffie, a sixth round pick, has been retained.
Heading into the 2025, the Packers have eight draft picks. With sights set on contending for a Super Bowl this upcoming season, many wonder if Green Bay might move up in the first round to take a player that can impact their team right away.
ESPN’s Bill Barnwell Thinks the Green Bay Packers Could Move Up to the 6th Overall Pick in the 2025 NFL Draft
In a recent article in which he states which teams he believes should make moves up or down in the 2025 NFL Draft, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell suggests that Green Bay could work out a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders, who hold the sixth overall pick.
He wrote, “Unless [the Raiders] are in love with Shedeur Sanders and are in position to take him at No. 6, moving down and attempting to build through young players is the way to go. Carroll’s early days in Seattle — where the Seahawks benefited from having extra picks in each of his first three drafts — are an example of how Las Vegas should be approaching its long-term vision with smart short-term decisions.
“If the Packers think there’s somebody like that in this draft, especially at wide receiver or edge rusher, they should give serious thought to taking a bigger swing by sacrificing some draft capital.”
Moving up from 23rd to sixth in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft would certainly take some heavy lifting. The Packers could, perhaps, avoid adding an extra draft pick by including disgruntled cornerback Jaire Alexander in any potential deal. However, even if Alexander were moved in the trade, Green Bay would still have to sacrifice some draft capital.
The question is whether they would be willing to do so. Gutekunst has traded up in the first round before (like when he selected Jordan Love), but moving up 17 spots would be Herculean.
