In recent decades, the Green Bay Packers have been known around the NFL for their unprecedented success of finding and developing franchise quarterbacks. Of course, that run started in 1992 when they acquired Pro Football Hall of Famer Brett Favre in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons. In 2005, they drafted future Pro Football Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers, who is widely believed to be one of the best quarterbacks of all time.
And, of course, now they have Jordan Love who, while not considered a future Hall of Famer, is undoubtedly their franchise quarterback.
Throughout the years, there have been many coaches who have come and gone, but one has worked with all three: quarterbacks coach Tom Clements.
Legendary Quarterbacks Coach Tom Clements Has Announced His Retirement
While meeting with the media on Tuesday, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur announced that his quarterbacks coach, Clements, was retiring from coaching.

Clements, who is a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, first was hired by Mike McCarthy to be the team’s quarterbacks coach in 2006. Favre, of course, was in his final years as Green Bay’s starting quarterback and Rodgers had already been drafted.
Favre’s 2007 season, though, was one of his best statistical seasons to that point of his career. With Clements’ tutelage, he had a then career-high 66.5% completion percentage to go with 4,155 passing yards (his most since 1998), 28 touchdowns, 15 interceptions (his fewest since 2001), and a 95.7 passer rating (his best since 1996).
Of course, Clements helped develop Rodgers into the quarterback that he was in Green Bay, one of the greatest of all time. In 2012, he was promoted to offensive coordinator, and in 2015 became McCarthy’s assistant head coach.
After stepping away from coaching following the 2016 season, Clements became the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach of the Arizona Cardinals from 2019-2020. Following his final year in Arizona, he announced his retirement.
However, when Packers quarterbacks coach Luke Getsy left the Packers to become the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator, LaFleur convinced Clements to come out of retirement to help develop Love. It was also a move that appeased a disgruntled Rodgers, who has always held Clements in high esteem.
The savvy veteran coach began his second stint with Green Bay in 2022. It was through his coaching that Love was able to take the next step in his development and convince the organization that he was ready to take the reins of the offense.
Now that Clements is retired, the Packers will have to look for a new quarterbacks coach. It would be interesting to see if they bring back Getsy, whom LaFleur hired as a consultant when he was fired by the Las Vegas Raiders this year.
Getsy, of course, was the team’s quarterback coach when Rodgers won his last two NFL MVP Awards.
