On Thursday, it was announced that three Green Bay Packers players had been named to the Pro Bowl. Running back Josh Jacobs was selected for the third time in his career while safety Xavier McKinney and defensive end Rashan Gary each made it for the first time.
McKinney was selected as the NFC’s starting free safety while Jacobs and Gary are backups on the roster.
Elgton Jenkins, a two-time Pro Bowler himself, was named a first alternate. Other alternates from the Packers were quarterback Jordan Love, tight end Tucker Kraft, cornerback Jaire Alexander, center Josh Myers, kick return specialist Keisean Nixon, and defensive tackle Kenny Clark.
Many Green Bay Packers Fans Were Confused by Rashan Gary Being Selected to the Pro Bowl
It is easy to see why Jacobs and McKinney both made the Pro Bowl. Jacobs is top five in the NFL in rushing yards and second in rushing touchdowns. McKinney is second in the NFL in interceptions, trailing only Kerby Joseph of the Detroit Lions, who did not make the NFC roster.
Many fans were confused, though, on Gary’s selection. Nick Bosa of the San Francisco 49ers and Micah Parsons of the Dallas Cowboys were selected as the starting defensive ends with Gary being the third and final player at the position.
Bosa has 36 quarterback pressures and 9.0 sacks on the season. Parsons, who has only played 12 games, has 42 pressures (fourth in the NFL) and 9.5 sacks.
Gary, meanwhile, has 6.5 sacks (42nd in the NFL) and 24 pressures (33rd in the NFL).
Why Was Green Bay Packers Defensive End Rashan Gary Selected to the Pro Bowl?
While Gary did not get many fan votes, it is important to remember that fan voting only counts for so much when the Pro Bowl rosters are determined.
The votes that matter most are those that are cast by NFL players and coaches themselves.
So regardless of how some Packers may view Gary and his low sack total this season, it is obvious that he is highly regarded by his peers in the NFL.
While others have put up bigger numbers, NFL players and coaches collectively agree, apparently, that Gary is the third-best defensive end in the NFC.
