Following the weird virtual 2020 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers decided to add running back Patrick Taylor as an undrafted free agent. However, he was injured prior to training camp and spent the year on the non-football injury list.
From 2021-2024, though, Taylor was there whenever the Packers called upon him. While he never made a 53-man roster, he was retained on the team’s practice squad and was frequently elevated to the active roster on game days.
During his three seasons with Green Bay, Taylor played in 34 games and amassed 261 rushing yards. Whenever he was activated, he was also a key contributor on special teams.
Unfortunately, following the 2023 season and heading into 2024, the Packers running back room was just too crowded and he was not brought back.
Former Green Bay Packers Running Back Patrick Taylor Has Re-Signed with the San Francisco 49ers

In April of 2024, Taylor was signed by one of Green Bay’s biggest rivals in the NFC, the San Francisco 49ers. Of course, there was not much of a chance that he would make the roster there either due to Christian McCaffrey and Isaac Guerendo also being on the team.
But when the 49ers got dealt more than their fair share of injuries at the running back position, Taylor once again answered the call from the depths of the practice squad.
He ended up playing in 13 games for the 49ers in 2024, including one in which he made his first career start. All told, he ran the ball 39 times for 183 yards and a touchdown. All totals were career highs.
Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, San Francisco is retaining their fallback option at the running back position with a one-year contract:
“The San Francisco 49ers and Patrick Taylor, Jr have agreed to a 1-year extension.”
While there is no guarantee, again, that he will make the 53-man roster, it is nice to see that teams still value Taylor. He may not be the greatest running back, but he is a team player and good locker room guy.
