The Green Bay Packers have a crucial showdown Thursday night against NFC North division rivals Detroit Lions at Ford Field in Motown.
But just before that game, the Packers announced a roster move, with the elevation of defensive back Kalen King to the main roster, the team announced via X (the social media platform formerly known as Twitter).

The Detroit game will be King’s debut in the NFL. He was taken in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL draft by the Packers as that class’ 255th selection overall. According to Spotrac, King was signed by Green Bay to a four-year deal worth $4.1 million in May but was waived in August. Shortly after that release, the Packers signed King to their practice squad.
Green Bay Packers’ Kalen King set to make NFL debut on Thursday vs. Detroit Lions
The 21-year-old King played college football for the Penn State Nittany Lions from 2021 to 2023. During his time with the Nittany Lions, King amassed three interceptions, 82 combined tackles and 25 passes defended through 38 games.
The Packers enter the Lions game just third in the NFC North division despite a stellar 9-3 record. Detroit leads the division with an 11-1 record while the Minnesota Vikings, who will play not play until Sunday, are second with a 10-2 slate. A Green Bay win over Detroit this Thursday would strengthen the Packers’ chances of not just making the playoffs but catching the Lions atop the division standings.
King surely hopes that he can contribute to the Packers’ defense which is ninth in the league with 20.0 points allowed per game and just 17th overall with 217.3 passing yards surrendered per contest.
