The Green Bay Packers made the highly unpopular decision last year to not re-sign kicker Mason Crosby. After 16 seasons, the front office made the decision that the kicker position would be a part of the massive youth movement that they were going to undertake. This movement, of course, meant moving on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers in favor of 2020 NFL Draft pick Jordan Love.
Moving on from Rodgers made some sense because Love was entering his fourth year in the NFL and had been sitting behind the future Hall of Famer for three seasons. However, moving on from Crosby was concerning to some fans because the Packers had no backup plan.
To replace Crosby, Green Bay selected Anders Carlson in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Carlson went on to have a rocky first season with the Packers, prompting the team to bring in some competition at the kicker position this offseason.
Former Green Bay Packers Kicker Mason Crosby Did Not Play Much in 2023
After Green Bay decided not to bring him back in 2023, Crosby remained unsigned for most of the season. He still wanted to play, though, and posted videos of him practicing kicks on any football field that he could find.
Eventually, Crosby was signed by the Los Angeles Rams and assigned to their practice squad. However, he was not activated for any regular season games and was released soon after.
Crosby did end up getting another call, though. The New York Giants picked him towards the end of the season and he finished the year as their kicker. He made five of his seven field goal attempts, including one from 52 yards away. Crosby also made six of his seven extra point attempts.
His contract, though, was just for the rest of the 2023 NFL regular season and he became a free agent once again.
Former Green Bay Packers Kicker Mason Crosby Snubbed for Washington Commanders Job After Brandon McManus Release
Last week, Washington Commanders kicker Brandon McManus had a lawsuit filed against him alleging that he sexually assaulted two Jacksonville Jaguars flight attendants. McManus, who was played for the Jaguars last year, had signed as a free agent with the Commanders earlier this offseason.
Following the filing of the lawsuit and upon hearing of the things he is accused of doing, the Commanders decided to release McManus. As he was the only kicker on their roster, they needed to find a replacement, and fast.
A few days ago, it was suggested that Crosby could be suitable replacement for McManus on the Commanders’ roster. However, they have decided to go in a different direction:
The Commanders are signing K Ramiz Ahmed, per source.

If the name Ramiz Ahmed sounds familiar to Packers fans, it is because he was on the team in 2022. He did not attempt any field goals, but did play in one game as the kickoff specialist.
