The Green Bay Packers have received a great deal of contributions from multiple 2024 NFL Draft picks this season. Inside linebacker Edgerrin Cooper, for example, has emerged as a bonified star and is already the best player at his position on the team. His fellow second round pick, Javon Bullard, emerged as Green Bay’s preferred starting nickel while fourth round pick Evan Williams has taken over as one of the starting safeties.
However, a couple of their picks, who were supposed to have roles on the team this year, ended up battling injuries all season long. First round pick Jordan Morgan, for example, battled a shoulder injury early in training camp and was only able to appear in six games this season. Prior to the injury, he was competing for the starting right guard position.
Third round pick Marshawn Lloyd, too, has been missing in action for the majority of the season following some really unfortunate bad luck.
Green Bay Packers Rookie Running Back Marshawn Lloyd Battled Injuries
When Lloyd was drafted by the Packers, he was expected to compete for one of the backup running back spots behind Josh Jacobs. He faced what was supposed to be stiff competition in Emanuel Wilson and AJ Dillon.
Unfortunately, Dillon was put on season-ending injured reserve after suffering a neck injury during a preseason game. Lloyd was hurt early in training camp and when he did make his preseason debut, he strained his hamstring and started the season injured.
When he finally made his NFL debut in Week Two, he suffered an ankle injury that landed him on injured reserve.
Lloyd remained there until late November when Green Bay opened his practice window and designated him to return. Hours after that, though, he need emergency surgery to remove his appendix.
Earlier this week, the Packers made the decision to transfer him from the non-football injury list to injured reserve, officially ending his season.
Green Bay Packers Running Back Marshawn Lloyd Responds to His Season Ending Early
On Sunday morning, before the Packers started their game with the Chicago Bears, Lloyd posted the following message on his Instagram:
View this post on Instagram
“Dear Rookie Year…. Thank you! Adversity is nothing new to me. Although I was not be able to play this year I appreciate the challenge. I will use this time to get my health back and get ready for next season. Watch me work!”
As Dillon is on a one-year deal and unlikely to return in 2025, Lloyd will again compete for the backup role behind Jacobs, presumably with Wilson.
