Following the 2022 NFL season, the Green Bay Packers made several noteworthy decisions regarding an overhaul of their roster. Of course, the most notable (and controversial) of these was trading Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets so that Jordan Love could take over as the starting quarterback. Not bringing back kicker Mason Crosby, too, turned out to be a very unpopular decision (given the struggles of Anders Carlson in 2023).
But what many fans and analysts forget is that Green Bay made many other roster decisions that transformed them from one of the oldest teams in the NFL to the absolute youngest. A couple of these decisions involved the tight end position, which saw two more fan favorites depart the Packers organization.
The Green Bay Packers Moved on from Tight Ends Marcedes Lewis and Robert Tonyan

From 2018-2022, Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis were two of the most important players in Green Bay’s tight end room. While Tonyan emerged, for a while, as a top target in the passing game, Lewis maintained his standing as one of the best pass and run blockers in the NFL, even among offensive linemen.
But following the 2022 season, the Packers allowed both of them to depart in free agency. To replace them, Green Bay selected Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Coincidentally, both Tonyan and Lewis signed with the Chicago Bears in free agency. While both of them spent the 2023 season with Green Bay’s rivals to the south, Tonyan was let go after one year and spent part of last season with the Minnesota Vikings (mostly on the practice squad). He was released before the year was over and picked up by the Kansas City Chiefs.
(Tonyan has since re-signed with Kansas City this offseason.)
But Lewis played out his two years with the Bears, helping to provide leadership to their rebuilding roster.
Former Green Bay Packers Tight End Marcedes Lewis Is a Free Agent

When the 2025 NFL season begins, Lewis will be 41 years old. A 19-year veteran, he has played more seasons in the NFL than any tight end in league history.
And he wants to keep going.
Last week, Lewis was a guest on the “The Herd with Colin Cowherd,” and he expressed his desire to continue his lengthy NFL career for at least another season. “I don’t know where yet,” Lewis said of where he will be playing in 2025. “You know, there’s been a few teams probing to kind of see if I’m going to continue to play. And so it’s all in the universe’s hands. And I’m just going to do my job like I’ve always done this offseason and train my butt off. And I’ll be ready when that happens.”
Unfortunately, Green Bay’s tight end room is rather crowded with Musgrave, Kraft, and Ben Sims. However, Lewis remained one of the best blocking tight ends in the NFL in 2024. While a reunion with the Packers is not likely, it will not be surprising if he lands a job elsewhere in 2025.
