The Green Bay Packers, like 29 other NFL teams, will be watching Super Bowl LIX from the comfort of their homes next week Sunday. This year’s title match sees the Philadelphia Eagles, who defeated Green Bay in the Wild Card round, take on the Kansas City Chiefs. Former Packers quarterbacks coach Andy Reid is looking to become the first NFL head coach since Vince Lombardi, and just the third ever, to lead his team to three consecutive league titles.
Philadelphia, meanwhile, is looking for their second Super Bowl in eight years, having won it for the first time ever during the 2017 season. Former Packers cornerback Rasul Douglas was on that Championship team.
Of course, former Wisconsin Badgers linebacker Zack Baun is currently a starter, All-Pro, and Defensive Player of the Year candidate on this year’s Eagles team. However, he is not the only player with ties to the state on Philadelphia’s roster.
Former Green Bay Packers Linebacker Oren Burks Has Been a Standout for the Philadelphia Eagles
Back in 2018, the Packers made Oren Burks a third round pick when they took him in the NFL Draft. Unfortunately, his career with Green Bay did not have the level of success that the team had hoped. In four seasons, he accumulated 92 tackles and two forced fumbles. When Burks’ rookie contract was up, the Packers let him walk in free agency.
After spending two years with the San Francisco 49ers (and appearing in a Super Bowl with them), Burks was signed by the Eagles.
While he did not initially make the 53-man roster, Burks appeared in all 17 regular season games for Philadelphia and registered 41 tackles and two forced fumbles.
Packers fans may recall that he was the player who forced Keisean Nixon to fumble the opening kickoff in the Wild Card game this year.
The Philadelphia Eagles Released Former Green Bay Packers Running Back Lew Nichols
Burks, however, was not the only former Packers player associated with the Eagles. Up until Saturday, Lew Nichols, a running back whom Green Bay drafted in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft, was a member of Philadelphia’s practice squad.
After Nichols was waived/injured and released by the Packers last year, he was picked up by the Eagles and signed to their practice squad. He has been there ever since.
However, Philadelphia released him today to make room for tight end Nick Muse:

This may just be a formality in Philadelphia. This is, quite literally, the third time Nichols was waived by the Eagles this year. He most recently re-signed with them a few days ago on January 30.
