The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl I on January 15, 1967 to win their second consecutive NFL title. The following year, the Packers defeated the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl II, winning their third straight league title. They were the first team since the 1929-1931 Green Bay team led by Curly Lambeau to win three consecutive NFL Championships, and they currently remain the last team to do so.
As NFL fans are well aware, the Chiefs of present day are knocking on the door of history. If they defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, it will be their third consecutive Super Bowl win, which would make them the first team in NFL history to win the Super Bowl three times in a row.
It would also make them the only team other than the Packers to win three consecutive titles. Two players who were on Vince Lombardi‘s Super Bowl teams are hoping that they maintain that distinction.
Green Bay Packers Legends Jerry Kramer and Dave Robinson Hope the Kansas City Chiefs Lose Super Bowl LIX
In an interview with the Denver Gazette, Hall of Fame Packers linebacker Dave Robinson, who used to cheer against the Eagles when he was growing up, stated, “I kind of would like the Eagles to put a stop to this three-peat business.”
Robinson will even be in attendance in New Orleans to watch Super Bowl LIX live.
In the same article, Hall of Fame offensive lineman Jerry Kramer said, “Well, I’m jealous because I feel like we had three straight Super Bowls, and we’re the only team to have had that. I don’t want to lose that distinction, so I’ve been pulling against (the Chiefs) and watching them closely, but they’re a heck of a football team.”
Robinson added that, had Coach Lombardi known how big of a deal the Super Bowl would be now, he would not have left Green Bay: “I will go to my grave saying that if Lombardi knew how big the Super Bowl was going to be, he would have stayed one more year (with Green Bay) and we would have won it the next year, too.”
As it happened, the Packers did not win another one until Super Bowl XXXI, a team that Andy Reid, the current coach of the Chiefs, served on as the tight ends coach.
Now, Reid is looking to become the first non-Packers head coach in NFL history to win three consecutive titles. He has already won three as a head coach and four overall if one counts his ring with Green Bay.
Obviously, the two Packers legends mentioned above hope that he does not match the achievement.
