Green Bay Packers: Defensive Coordinator Jeff Hafley Reveals True Feelings on Nate Hobbs Amid Questionable Reports

One of the biggest questions surrounding the Green Bay Packers ever since the offseason began was what their cornerback room was going to look like in 2025. Jaire Alexander, of course, had these conversations getting started early when, just a day after the Packers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the postseason, he told reporters he had nothing good to say about the team and did not know if he would return in 2025.

Of course, he is not returning, having been released by Green Bay and subsequently signed by the Baltimore Ravens.

But before the Alexander saga ended, the Packers also saw three other cornerbacks, Eric Stokes, Corey Ballentine, and Robert Rochelle, all leave in free agency.

Due to these losses, many expected the Packers to make cornerback a major focus in free agency and the NFL Draft. But their main additions were veteran Nate Hobbs and selecting Micah Robinson in the seventh round.

Ever since training camp began, Hobbs has been at the center of several notable stories regarding the intensity and physicality of his play. Even before the Packers started practicing with pads, Hobbs had to be talked to by head coach Matt LaFleur regarding how aggressive he was being towards his teammates.

And on Monday, Hobbs was benched during padded practice for a low hit on running back Marshawn Lloyd. The second-year running back injured his groin on the play, but the injury is not a result of the hit Hobbs laid on him.

The aggressiveness and edge, however, with which Hobbs plays is exactly why the Packers wanted to sign him in free agency. After the incident on Monday, general manager Brian Gutekunst said it is rather refreshing for him to have to tell a player to tone it down in practice instead of asking them to play harder.

And the Packers general manager is not the only one who loves having Hobbs and his aggressive approach on the team. His defensive coordinator, Jeff Hafley, is a big fan as well.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Hafley said of Hobbs, “I love him. He’s physical. He brings a toughness, he brings an edge, he brings a level of competitiveness. He’s strong. He gets hands on people. He can play inside and outside.”

Green Bay’s defense has been lacking a tone-setter from many years, a player who will give them an mental edge over opposing offenses.

Perhaps Hobbs can be that guy.
