Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is a free agent for the first time in his 20-year NFL career. For many players, hitting free agency sees them bombarded with a plethora of teams interested in their services. As a result, they have their choice from multiple NFL franchises for whom to continue their careers.
Such is not the case for Rodgers. At 41 years old (and he will turn 42 during the 2025 NFL season), there are concerns about his longevity and desire to even play. Whereas there were many teams bidding for his services just three years ago (when serious trade rumors involving the four-time NFL MVP began), there are less than a handful now.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Does Not Have Many Options in NFL Free Agency

Going into the 2025 offseason, Rodgers expressed his desire to play for the New York Jets again, that is, if he decided to play at all. However, New York’s new head coach and general manager decided that it was in the best interest of the Jets if the future Pro Football Hall of Famer did not come back.
Rodgers has since been released with a post-June 1 designation.
Now a free agent, the former Packers quarterback has seen team after team choose different veterans over him. Even the Minnesota Vikings, who lost Pro Bowler Sam Darnold and only have the inexperienced JJ McCarthy on their roster at the position, declined to entertain him.
The Vikings’ decision has left the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers as the only two teams interested in signing the four-time NFL MVP. While he has not met with the Giants, he did spend six hours over this last weekend visiting with Pittsburgh.
However, Rodgers has not yet signed their contract offer, and does not appear in any hurry to do so.
Former Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver James Jones Blames the Pittsburgh Steelers for the Aaron Rodgers Delay

Former Packers wide receiver James Jones, who was a teammate of Rodgers’ for years, believes that Pittsburgh itself is to blame for Rodgers taking so long to make a decision.
Speaking on Fox Sports‘ “The Facility,” Jones said, “It’s too late—you already showed Aaron Rodgers, ‘we are waiting on you.’ We told all these quarterbacks no. We told Russell Wilson no. We lost out on all these quarterbacks. So, the only option left to do—if you want to try to have a productive season—is to bring in Aaron Rodgers. You have to wait on him.”
“The Steelers have no choice but to wait on Aaron Rodgers. They put themselves in this position.”

The NFL Draft will take place in Green Bay in a month, and the Steelers would undoubtedly like a decision before then. Rodgers, too, would probably like to have his future figured out sooner rather than later.
But any player that has played for 20 years, especially at the high level that Rodgers has, has earned the right to take their time weighing such a life-altering decision.
And Rodgers is certainly taking his time.
