Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander has not stayed healthy for the last two seasons. There will be a major case for him to be released by the Packers after the 2024 season. He has not played since November against the Chicago Bears.
It will be interesting to see if Jaire Alexander will suit up against the Chicago Bears this weekend or not. There is a case to rest him once again before the playoffs start the following week.
Bleacher Report Suggests That the Green Bay Packers Replace Jaire Alexander With Signing Asante Samuel Jr. This NFL Offseason
Asante Samuel Jr. has not played for the Los Angeles Chargers since 9/29 against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4. He is 25 years old and was a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft (47th overall selection). There is a great chance that the Chargers let him walk this offseason.
If that’s the case, then there is a chance that the Green Bay Packers could sign him. Bleacher Report suggested that the Packers should sign him this NFL offseason. They said:
“Green Bay is widely expected to be looking for some cornerback help seeing as Eric Stokes is an impending free agent and hasn’t played well. Also, Jaire Alexander has struggled to stay on the field over the last two years, and the club could save $17.5 million of cap space by making Alexander a post-June 1 cut, per Over The Cap. Meanwhile, Samuel will likely be one of the top corners on the open market. He’ll be just 26 years old in October and has impressive ball skills with 37 passes defended in 50 career games. However, the current Charger has missed the majority of the current campaign with a shoulder injury, so this pairing would depend on how his medicals check out.”
In just four games played this season, he has recorded 13 tackles, two pass deflections, and zero interceptions. Samuel Jr. could very well be the number one cornerback for the Green Bay Packers if they got rid of Jaire Alexander.
Cornerback Issues All-Around
There is no doubt that there are issues with the cornerback position for the Green Bay Packers. They are not deep at the position. General manager Brian Gutekunst is going to have to draft cornerbacks, sign free agents, and make trades for one.
Jaire Alexander is no longer reliable for the Packers’ defense. If they were to sign Asante Samuel Jr., it would be a nice start for them but it will be a position that will need to be overhauled this offseason.
