Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander has not played since November. On Wednesday, it was announced by head coach Matt LaFleur that Alexander had a PCL tear and will undergo surgery and likely be out for the season.
This is a big blow for the Packers’ secondary right before the playoffs begin. Green Bay will face the Chicago Bears before heading on the road in the playoffs next week.
Green Bay Packers Encouraged To Sign Free Agent Cornerback J.C. Jackson To Replace Jaire Alexander
The Packers’ cornerback position is in shambles without Alexander. Freddie Boston of lombardiavenue.com thinks that there are a couple of cornerbacks that Green Bay could sign to replace Jaire Alexander for the playoffs. One name that the Green Bay Packers should sign is J.C. Jackson. Boston said:
“J.C. Jackson is only three seasons removed from earning Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors for the New England Patriots. That year, he made an incredible, league-best 23 pass defenses and eight interceptions. Between 2019 and 2021, he broke up 47 passes and intercepted 22.
However, Jackson’s numbers declined dramatically after signing with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022 before returning to the Patriots midway through last season. Jackson earned disappointing PFF grades of 28.7 and 34.8 in the past two seasons, respectively, and hasn’t played since.
Can Jackson recapture his All-Pro form? Probably not. But if he can get anywhere close, the veteran could improve the Packers’ secondary during the playoffs. However, considering his disappointing play over the past two seasons, it’s a move the team likely won’t consider.
Teams always need cornerback help, which makes it hard to find upgrades this late in the season. But if the Packers want to bring in a veteran, Peterson and Jackson could help.”
J.C. Jackson is 29 years old. This would not be a bad move for them because he could probably start right away for the Green Bay Packers.
Probably Stuck With What They Have
It is probably too late in the game to sign a free-agent cornerback like J.C. Jackson to replace Jaire Alexander. Green Bay is stuck with Eric Stokes and Corey Ballentine at cornerback and also Keisean Nixon at cornerback for the rest of the 2024 season and the playoffs.
The Green Bay Packers will have to make a major decision about Jaire Alexander this offseason. For now, they are going to have to deal with being shorthanded at the cornerback position.
