The Green Bay Packers need receiver Matthew Golden to add a new dimension to the offense, that of the “reliable deep threat” Christian Watson hasn’t quite become. For now, though, the team has the no. 23 pick in this year’s draft doing baby steps. Through two days of training camp, the Golden feels good about his progress.
Green Bay Packers ease Golden along early
While Golden’s reps have focused on the basics thus far, barely scratching the playbook’s laminated surface, head coach Matt LaFleur is impressed with knowledge and tools his rookie brought into camp, per Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
“I think they did a really good with that at Texas, exposing him to a lot of different things,” LaFleur said. “But, you know, we’ll just kind of see how it goes throughout the course of training camp.”

Just two days in, Golden has plenty of time to learn the ropes. In his first and only Longhorns season after transferring from Houston, he put up team-best production – 58 receptions, 987 yards, nine touchdowns – on a squad that made the national semifinal in the revamped college football playoffs. His seven-catch, 149-yard performance keyed a quarterfinal overtime victory versus Arizona State.

Golden has already impressed in the pros to the point of re-stoking Romeo Doubs trade rumors to make room for the rookie’s emergence. His first NFL training camp has gone well in the early going.
“I definitely feel like it’s starting to come along for me,” he said per Silverstein. “Things are starting to click for me. As much as I’m on the field, that’s the more I feel comfortable just going every day, just getting better and learning as much as I can.”
Set to turn 22 in a week, Golden has what many believe will be an electric rookie campaign ahead of him. It’s possible, though perhaps unlikely, that he becomes the top option over Jayden Reed in year one.

That’s getting ahead of things though. Get a good break from the line. Shake n’ bake. See ball. Catch it. For now, it’s all about the basics.
