Former Wisconsin Badgers basketball star John Tonje doesn’t seem to be a big NFL guy, as he said in a recent post on social media that he didn’t have a football team he cheered for when he was much younger.
However, it is never too late for anyone to be a football fan, and the same goes for Tonje, who revealed that he’s now a fan of the Green Bay Packers.
Never had a football team growing up but I went to Wisconsin so I think I’m a Packers fan🧀😂
— John Tonje (@johntonje1) August 12, 2025
That makes a lot of sense, considering he played for the Badgers, even for just a season.
Tonje, who was born in North Omaha, Nebraska, started his college basketball career with the Colorado State Rams before transferring to the Missouri Tigers. He finished his college stint with the Badgers in the 2024-25 season, but it appears as though he went through all those years without getting bitten by the football bug.
In any case, the world now knows where his pro football allegiance lies.
Selected in the second round of the 2025 NBA draft by the Utah Jazz, Tonje can start cheering in the upcoming 2025 NFL regular season for the Packers when Green Bay hosts the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field in Week 1.

Fans react to Tonje’s Green Bay Packers admission

Meanwhile, Packers fans have welcomed Tonje with open arms to Green Bay fandom.
“I know that’s right! #GoPackGo,” said a fan on X.
Another one said: “Are you just seeing how much the state can love you as a person/athlete??”
From a commenter: “You god damn right you are my guy! Welcome aboard man, we are glad to have you after all you gave us at Wiscy!”
“There plenty of room for John Tonje on the Packer Bandwagon.,” a social media user posted.
Via a different commenter: “No team has more history and a cool venue in the NFL. Good choice 🙏🤙”
Said another: “You cool wise and good looking so what other choice do you have but to go with the best in nfl history”
