Former Green Bay Packers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell saw his season come to an end on Monday morning. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the San Francisco 49ers, whom Campbell signed with during the offseason for one year and $5 million, has suspended the former First Team All-Pro linebacker for the remaining three games of the season.
“His actions from the game is just not something you can do to your team,” San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said.
Campbell’s 2024 season comes to an end after 13 games. He recorded 79 tackles, no sacks, no interceptions, no forced fumbles, and two passes defended. He had played in 90% of the 49ers defensive snaps.
Why Did the 49ers Suspend Former Green Bay Packers Linebacker De’Vondre Campbell?
San Francisco saw their hopes of making the NFL Playoffs all but come to an end this past Thursday night when they lost to the Los Angeles Rams. Following Green Bay’s victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night, the Rams, at 8-6, are now the leaders of the NFC West. The 49ers, meanwhile, have virtually no shot at making the postseason with their 6-8 record.
In the third quarter of that game, San Francisco linebacker Dre Greenlaw went down with an injury. When Shanahan told Campbell, who had not yet entered the game, to go in for his injured teammate, the former Packers All-Pro refused, stating that he did not feel like playing that night.
Campbell’s decision and words angered his teammates and coaches. “It’s very dumb, very stupid, very immature…. I don’t see how you can do that to your teammates,” All-Pro tight end George Kittle said.
What makes Campbell’s selfish actions even more frustrating is the fact that two of his teammates, Trent Williams and Charvarius Ward, have each suffered through the loss of a child this season, yet still show up for their teammates.
Williams’ son was stillborn the night the Packers and 49ers played in Week 12. Ward’s one-year old daughter, who was born with two holes in her heart, passed away a couple of weeks ago.
San Francisco chose to suspend Campbell instead of releasing him because they did not want him to get the “reward” of being able to sign with a different team this year.
It is hard to see any NFL team being interested in signing him even after this year considering he has quit on his last two teams.
