Green Bay Packers Unofficial Depth Chart Reveals 3 Big Questions in the Secondary

The Green Bay Packers have been out at training camp for over two weeks now, and on August 5th, an unofficial depth chart was released as a sort of progress report on several important position battles. While many positions have little to no drama surrounding the top players occupying the starting roles, the defensive secondary continues to have question marks.

Green Bay Packers Release Unofficial Depth Chart

Teams around the NFL have been battling it out at training camp for weeks now, and many are releasing unofficial depth charts that can be used as metrics for how players are progressing. The Green Bay Packers’ chart certainly features some interesting details.

Once again, the depth chart is unofficial, meaning it does not necessarily reflect the current standing of many players. So for example, while it is potentially noteworthy that rookie first-round receiver Matthew Golden is not in the top 3 receiver depth chart, that does not automatically reflect on how much playing time he will receive come September.

The secondary is where there are some interesting bits to take away, however. The team has some issues to sort out at both the top end and the bottom end of their depth chart in the defensive back end.

Green Bay Packers Have 3 Big Questions In the Secondary – Including One Injury Concern

The Packers have several key issues to smooth out in the secondary. The first one is a health-related question mark that takes the shape of 48-million-dollar free agent signing Nate Hobbs. The former Las Vegas Raider, who was involved in several incidents of excessive physicality during practices, had knee surgery to repair his meniscus in his right leg.

The surgery took place on Saturday, resulting in Hobbs being put on the shelf for the remaining of camp. The 26-year-old spoke about the decision with the media after it was revealed he would not be back for any further practices.

“I felt like it was something we needed to do. They gave me the option of whether I wanted to do it the next day or the day after, I’m like, ‘We can do this today. Let’s get ahead of starting to get back.'”

Hobbs hopes to be back in time for the regular season opener against the Detroit Lions. Head coach Matt LaFleur was reluctant to put an exact timetable on his return, but also expressed optimism about his return.

Green Bay Packers Have Depth Chart Questions At the End of the Roster

The second big question for the Packers is Corey Ballentine. The veteran corner played with Green Bay from 2022 to 2024 and is now back with the team after being released by the Indianapolis Colts. Ballentine signed a 1-year deal worth just over $1 million days after his release. He is familiar with both the scheme and coaching staff from last season, and would be a smart reserve option as a veteran on a cheaper contract.

Yet, the depth chart lists the experienced Ballentine as the sixth corner on the roster. Ahead of him are presumed starters in Hobbs, Keisean Nixon, third-year pro Carrington Valentine, 2024 practice squad member Kamal Hadden, and interestingly, Bo Melton, a player who has played with the Packers for several seasons now but is just transitioning from receiver to defensive back.

Melton is the third question for the secondary. It remains to be seen how effective Melton will be at his new position. While the crowded wide receiver room was clearly the catalyst for the position change, Melton is likely to be more of a special teams player if he ends up making the roster. His punt return skills also add to his repertoire of abilities.

The Packers will have some interesting cut decisions at the fringe of their defensive back room, and are currently facing the prospect of potentially starting the season without one of their top new corners.
