The Green Bay Packers are likely wanting some reinforcements for their secondary during this offseason. With the 2025 free agency period officially open, the first day has already seen several of potential targets be taken off the market, involving some massive contracts with surprising guarantees. Meanwhile, the Jaire Alexander situation continues to loom over the team.

Several Green Bay Packers Targets Sign Lucrative Deals Early in Free Agency
The Green Bay Packers were linked with former New York Jets cornerback DJ Reed entering free agency, but several dominoes have toppled and resulted in Reed being snapped up early. One of the top defensive back players is off the market just hours into day one of free agency.

The division rival Detroit Lions were the team fortunate enough to land Reed’s services. The move came in response to the Lions losing starter Carlton Davis to the New England Patriots. Davis is coming off a decent year that was unfortunately filled with injuries, including knocks to both shoulders and a startling broken jaw injury.
The deal involves over half of his 60-million-dollar deal being guaranteed.

Reed, who many will view as an upgrade to Davis, lands in Detroit and will be set to join exciting defensive talent like Aidan Hutchinson and Brian Branch. Packers fans who were hoping to land the exciting corner now lament the fact that they not only missed out, but Reed is headed to a hated division rivals instead.

Other Veteran Cornerbacks the Green Bay Packers Missed Out On
Two other notable names are off the cornerback market early – the Dallas Cowboys’ Jourdan Lewis and the New Orelans Saints’ Paulson Adebo.
Lewis is headed to the Jacksonville Jaguars in a 3-year, 30-million dollar deal. The veteran had been with Dallas since he was drafted in 2017 but now heads to the AFC South. The Jaguars are always a team that spends big in free agency, and Lewis is one of their newest acquisitions.

Adebo is a name many Packers fans have been wanting this offseason. The veteran is an aggressive defender who leads the NFL in pass breakups over the last two seasons, at the cost of also being near the top in penalty yards. However, last season, Adebo’s year was cut short just 7 games in due to a broken femur.

Adebo will not be heading to the Packers and instead will be joining the New York Giants. At just 25 years of age, he was one of the youngest of the top cornerback free agents. Yet another big name has exited the market before the Packers could do anything about it.

The Jaire Alexander Situation Continues to be Drawn Out as Free Agency Kicks Off
Despite all the early noise in the free agency market, the Green Bay Packers have plenty of in-house drama still to deal with. Veteran corner Jaire Alexander remains on the roster despite being shopped for the past few weeks. The Baltimore Ravens remain a team associated with Alexander, but evidently, no team is keen to trade many assets to acquire Alexander.

With many of the top veteran corners now off the free agency market, perhaps Alexander may garner more interest from some corner-needy teams who figured to land one of the bigger names. Alexander would be an expensive, injury-prone option, the primary reasons why he has not been traded for at this point, but is still a high-level player when available.. The Packers will continue to shop him and hopefully add someone to the secondary soon.
