After a surprising 2023 NFL campaign where they made finished with a winning record and even scored a win in the playoffs, the Green Bay Packers have heavier expectations riding on their shoulders. One area that has been observed closely in Green Bay is the kicker position.
After Anders Carlson and Greg Joseph failed to satisfy the Packers, both kickers were cut. With Carlson and Joseph gone, the Packers are going with an undrafted rookie in Brayden Narveson to handle the kicking chores.
Biggest concern: Isn’t it almost always the defense (where the Packers have their third DC in LaFleur’s six seasons) or special teams? The early reviews of former Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley’s new defense in Green Bay have been positive, but there has been misguided optimism on that side of the ball before.
Which brings us to the kicking game, where the Packers — for now — are going with undrafted rookie Brayden Narveson, who was claimed off waivers from Tennessee after final cuts. This was after none of the other five kickers the Packers had on the roster at various times this offseason (Anders Carlson, Greg Joseph, Jack Podlesny, James Turner and Alex Hale) proved worthy. — Demovsky
Is Brayden Narveson the solution for the Packers’ kicker woes?
Narveson did not hear his name called at the 2024 NFL draft and he only appeared in three preseason games with the Tennessee Titans before the AFC South division team cut him in favor of veteran Nick Folk. For what it’s worth, Narveson went 6/7 on his field-goal attempts with the Titans in the preseason.
Without a true NFL game experience, the pressure is on Narveson to prove that he is the right guy for the job.
For Narveson, though, “pressure is a privilege,” (h/t Zach Kruse of Packers Wire).
He can show off his nerves as soon as Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season when the Packers play the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil.
