The Green Bay Packers made the decision to move on from four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers following the 2022 NFL season. Of course, they ended up trading him to the New York Jets, the team he identified as the one he wanted to play for, and handed over the keys of their offense to Jordan Love. At the time, it was a controversial decision that was met with a great deal of criticism.
Now, though, it is hard to deny the fact that the Packers won the trade.
With Love under center, Green Bay made the postseason in 2023 after missing the NFL Playoffs in Rodgers’ final season with the team. They also have clinched a Wild Card berth this season, currently sitting at 11-4.
The Jets, meanwhile, lost Rodgers for virtually all of 2023 after he tore his Achilles four offensive snaps into Week One. After a 7-10 finish, they were hopeful that a healthy Rodgers would finally help them end their postseason drought.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets Have Struggled in 2024
Heading into Week 17, Rodgers and the Jets are just 4-11 on the season and have long been eliminated from postseason contention. While the future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback has not been terrible, per say, he has not performed at the standard that he and others have for himself.
So far this season, Rodgers has completed 62.8% of his passes for 3,511 yards, 24 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and a passer rating of 90.8. For most quarterbacks, this would be a great season. But for Rodgers, it is one of the worst of his prestigious NFL career.
Of course, New York has not had the greatest year off the field. Owner Woody Johnson made the decision to fire head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas before the season ended, leaving many questions left unanswered as the Jets crawl to the 2024 finish line.
One of these questions is whether or not Rodgers will return for the final year of his contract in 2025 and, if he does, what that would mean for the future of Garrett Wilson with the team.
NFL Insider Ian Rapoport Says Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Could Play for the Cleveland Browns in 2025
On Sunday morning, NFL insider Ian Rapoport discussed the quarterback situations of both the Jets and Cleveland Browns. As some fans may know, Cleveland recently restructured the contract of Deshaun Watson, giving them more cap space in 2025.
While Watson’s massive contract is fully guaranteed, there is speculation that he will be replaced as the Browns starting quarterback next season. And if that is so, Rapoport named Rodgers as a potential replacement:

As one can see from the video, former Minnesota Vikings (and current Atlanta Falcons) quarterback Kirk Cousins was named as another potential replacement. Cousins was recently benched by the Falcons in favor of rookie Michael Penix Jr. as he is the current NFL leader in interceptions (with 16).
For his part, Rodgers has stated that his preference is to play for the Jets in 2025, if he decides he wants to play at all. The fact of the matter is that retirement is very much on the table for the 41-year-old quarterback, as it has been over the past few seasons.
