Marquette Golden Eagles guard Stevie Mitchell wowed yesterday, scoring 18 points with six rebounds to help his team get the win against the visiting Creighton Bluejays.
He made the right plays, hustled for the boards, defended well, and complemented his big men David Joplin and backcourt partner Kam Jones.
Mitchell was so good, even Jim Calhoun’s son Sam was impressed and had to post about it on X.
It was his defense that did the most damage on Creighton’s game plan.
“There is no player in the Big East making a bigger impact on defense than Stevie Mitchell this year,” said an impressed Ryan Cassidy, writer for Big East Basketball.

As for his offense, Mitchell just came out on top of every challenges given to him, including getting guarded by the other team’s star and big man Ryan Kalkbrenner.
“We were expecting them to try something,” Mitchell said post-game as quoted by Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Ben Steele.
“Did I completely expect him to start on me? No.
“But we can’t control what they do. We can only control how we attack the game. My teammates, coaches, just tell me to be aggressive.
David Joplin all praises on Stevie Mitchell
Kam Jones may be the biggest name in Marquette but every game, there’s always someone who gets the spotlight.
It was Mitchell last night.
For big man David Joplin, the team is wired like that because they have a collective goal.
Talking to reporters about the honor of getting to 1,000 points in total for Marquette, he said they “want more” and that kind of thinking means another person reaching that milestone.
“I’m glad to be one of the few players to score 1,000 points in Marquette basketball history. But we want more. We want more. We want to win. We want to get to the bigger goals and that. But I’m super excited. I’m glad and now it’s Stevie (Mitchell’s) turn. We’re gonna get him there.”
