Stevie Mitchell got more freedom this season for the Marquette Golden Eagles with the departure of some teammates to the big league and coach Shaka Smart thinks he is making a good account of himself after receiving added responsibilities.
The senior guard had one of his best games the other night against Creighton Bluejays where he scored 18 points while doing significant damage defensively against the opponents best players.
It is unknown whether Mitchell will play a fourth year with the team and Smart knows that in case he does not, he will be a huge loss to the squad.
“He’s just got this energy that’s unique to him that nobody else has,” Smart said.
“Particularly when he’s kind of in that Stevie mode that is superhuman. We’re going to miss him a lot when he’s gone. So I tell myself in moments like that to make sure to appreciate him.”
It would be sweet for Mitchell and the rest of the Golden Eagles if they will be able to cap off his great season with a title.
The job can only get harder from here on.
Stevie Mitchell will have his hands full versus Hoyas
The Golden Eagles, which recently climbed up to no. 7 in the AP ranking, take on the Georgetown Hoyas next and it will be a serious challenge.
The Hoyas are on their own five-game winning streak, led by Malik Mack who went nuclear in the second half against Xavier in their last game.
Mitchell will probably tasked to guard the Georgetown scorer.
Mack is confident with his ability.
“I just played through the offense, took opportunities to make a play, and I felt like I was open on certain shots that I knew I could make because that’s what I have been working on,” Mack said.
