There has been a lot of speculating circulating this week in regards to Giannis’s future with the Milwaukee Buck. During the All-Star break, Giannis made comments about how “awesome” it would be to team up with his brothers on an NBA team. Many fans have taken this statement as an indication that Giannis will leave Milwaukee when his current contract expires after next season. However, in another recent interview, Giannis reiterated his desire of winning a championship with the Bucks.
In Giannis’s first season, the Bucks went 15-67. Since then, they have only had one season below 500. Last year, the Bucks had the league’s best record at 60-22. Giannis also won his first career MVP award. However, the Bucks fell short of the ultimate goal by losing four games in a row to the Toronto Raptors in the Eastern Conference Finals.
This season, they again have the league’s best record with a 46-8 record. They are, in fact, on pace to become just the third team in NBA history to win 70 games in a season. Giannis and Khris Middleton again represented the Bucks in the All-Star game. By all indicators, Milwaukee finally has a winning basketball culture.
It is this winning culture that will potentially keep Giannis a Buck for the long-term. Following last year’s disappointing elimination, Giannis and the Bucks seem more determined than ever to win a championship with the Bucks. In an interview published by the L.A. Times, Giannis was quoted as saying,
“We want to win as many games as possible, but our goal is to win the whole thing,” Antetokounmpo said, and added that “if you win every game, that would be great. But we cannot lose focus. We can’t lose track of our actual goal, which is get better every day, keep learning every day, and win the whole thing.”
The Bucks are currently the favorites to come out of the East. If they do, and accomplish their goal this year, it almost guarantees Giannis will remain in Milwaukee.
