The Brooklyn Nets are said to be among those interested in a potential trade involving Milwaukee Bucks franchise player Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, the recent news about Sacramento Kings star point guard De’Aaron Fox being available before the Feb. 6 trade deadline has been rumored to change how the Nets view their priorities.
“Fox immediately supplants Jimmy Butler atop the list of available game-changers, and Brooklyn sees the Kings guard as a trade target — though sources tell The Post that Giannis Antetokounmpo is still the ultimate prize,” Brian Lewis of the New York Post wrote.
As mentioned by Lewis, Butler, whose ongoing standoff with the Miami Heat, remains part of the trade equation for the Nets, but both he and Antetokounmpo now take the backseat, with Fox taking the attention of the Atlantic division franchise.
Giannis Antetokounmpo still a possibility for the Brooklyn Nets despite recent De’Aaron rumors
Still, that doesn’t mean the Nets’ interest in the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player has dramatically waned.
The Nets must gauge if Antetokounmpo — whom The Post has reported is still their white whale — will ever become available, and if they’re prepared to wait.
“Brooklyn is still holding out for Giannis,” a source told The Post.
The Nets can’t go for both Fox and Antetokounmpo for logistical reasons; Fox will still be earning $37.096 million in the 2025-26 season before hitting the free-agent market while Antetokoumpo inked a three-year contract extension worth $175.37 million in 2023 with a player option worth over $62 million for the 2027-28 campaign.
