A former Packers linebacker is retiring
The Green Bay Packers have been blessed with some good linebackers over the years. In recent history, the Packers have had solid linebackers like A.J. Hawk and Clay Mathews. The Packers rookie Quay Walker could join that list if he continues progressing. A former Packers linebacker who had success with the team announced his retirement on Thursday.
According to a statement by the Packers, Blake Martinez is retiring from the NFL.

The Packers drafted Martinez in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Martinez had a spectacular 2017 season with the Packers. He co-led the league in tackles with 144 combined tackles that season. Martinez was solid on the Packers’ defense through the 2019 season. He then signed a three-year deal with the New York Giants before the 2020 season.
Unfortunately for Martinez, he sustained an ACL injury during the 2021 season. He was released from the Giants after the team’s training camp. It didn’t take Martinez long to find another team needing his services. Martinez was signed to the Las Vegas Raiders practice squad and was moved to the team’s active roster by October 7th.
Martinez appeared in four games for the Raiders this season. He racked up 17 total tackles in his 105 snaps this season. His play never seemed the same after his ACL injury, and he finished with a 38.4 overall grade from Pro Football Focus for this season.
Martinez says goodbye
On his Instagram, the former Packers linebacker posted his announcement to retire from the NFL. The Raiders posted his quote on their Twitter page:
“I’m announcing my retirement from the game of football! I had an amazing journey with some incredible franchises, and made lifelong friendships.
