Aaron Rodgers will go down as one of the best ever to do it in the NFL, but his stint with the New York Jets is not helping shore up his legacy. The Jets are not winning and their outlook doesn’t seem too bright with Rodgers in the equation. The dream of making the NFL playoffs and winning the Super Bowl with a future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback remains, well, a dream for the Jets.
In Week 17, Rodgers created some buzz when he admitted that he suggested to the Jets to take him out of the game and let backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor see action amid a blowout against the Buffalo Bills.
“I mean it was 33-0, we were sitting there & I said at some point probably go to Tyrod [Taylor] here, huh? Then the next play [the #Bills] threw a screen for a touchdown. So it was 40-0,” Rodgers told reporters in the postgame press conference (h/t Paul Andrew Esden Jr.).
Keyshawn Johnson rips Aaron Rodgers
Many people didn’t like that admission from Rodgers, who turned 41 years old in December. Among those who called out Rodgers was former Jets wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson.
“You decide to take your ball and go home because you wasn’t getting your way,” Johnson said of Rodgers during Monday’s edition of FS1’s “Speak” (h/t the New York Post).
Johnson then accused Rodgers of quitting on the Jets.
“You quit on your team, man. I’m not going to be nice to Aaron Rodgers like that. I thought he was on a mission to convince them [the Jets] that he should come back. Based on what he did yesterday I don’t want to be nowhere near him,” Johnson added.
Rodgers and the Jets enter Week 18 with a 4-12 record. Despite what happened in Week 17, he is expected to start under center for the Jets versus the Miami Dolphins this coming Sunday, which could also be his final game with New York – and perhaps in the NFL.
