The possibility of Devin Williams leaving the Milwaukee Brewers is quite high after the team decided to decline the option of his contract. The organization will not let him go without anything getting in return.
The MLB 2025 Free Agency is already open and many believe Williams will be among the most sought-after in the market. New York Yankees are among the names trying to get his services but another club from American League could threaten their chances of getting the elite closer.
This is based on the fact that this other team have so much more to offer compared to the Yanks.
David Gasper of FanSided suggested that 2023 champions Texas Rangers should lock their eyes in search for a closer and Williams should be in their radar.
“The Texas Rangers won the World Series in 2023 and instead of making a serious bid for a repeat, they fell way short of the postseason in 2024. A large part of the problem was a lack of pitching. Injuries ravaged the staff, with Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer, and Tyler Mahle unable to be relied upon in their rotation and the bullpen was seriously lacking,” he wrote.
He added that the Rangers can be a more desirable trade partner for the Brewers since the former already have major league ready players.
Why the Yankees should have interest on Devin Williams
Right now, there is no expressed intention from the Yankees over the 2020 National League Rookie of the Year.
However, based on their needs, many experts believe it is only right for them to target the 30-year-old right handed pitcher who is set to earn $8 million after the arbitration.
The team had Luke Weaver as their closer last season but outside of him, there is no one reliable enough. Stacking up the bullpen with the best pitcher has been what most teams these days are doing.
The Brewers are also the team that wants to maximize the opportunities when it comes to their free agents.
