Despite having just one year of team control remaining, Devin Williams was arguably the most sought-after reliever available this winter. The New York Yankees ended up winning the sweepstakes as they sent pitcher Nestor Cortes and infielder Caleb Durbin to the Milwaukee Brewers. While numerous teams were engaged in discussion for him, another ‘bridesmaid’ has been revealed.

What would the Arizona Diamondbacks have had to offer for Devin Williams?
Following the framework of the trade between the Brewers and Yankees, it’s possible that Arizona discussed sending Jordan Montgomery and a controllable prospect to Milwaukee. Relations between Montgomery and the Diamondbacks have been strained, especially after owner Ken Kendrick referred to signing him last year as a “horrible decision,” making a trade increasingly likely. However, one major hurdle in trading Montgomery is the fact that he is owed $22.5 million next year.
At this time, it’s unknown how serious discussions between the Brewers and Diamondbacks got or what player(s) were involved. However, if Arizona is still looking for bullpen help they may have to shift their attention to guys like Tanner Scott, Jeff Hoffman, or Ryan Pressly.
