Milwaukee Brewers outfielder and fan favorite Christian Yelich had an MVP season in 2018. Christian finished with a .326 average, 36 homers, and 110 RBI, while also hitting for the cycle twice in the 2018 season. His 2019 campaign was even more impressive than his 2018 season: batting .329, 44 homers, and 97 RBI. His season was unfortunately cut short after he hit a foul ball off his knee which caused the knee to break late in the season, meaning he had to miss the rest of the regular season along with the postseason.
Christian Yelich Returned From His Injury a Shadow of His Former Self
Yelich returned in the 2020 season, but MLB cut the season short due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and it was easy to tell he was a completely different hitter and player in general. He batted .205, had 12 home runs, and 22 RBI in 41 games. The Brewers still made the playoffs with a record of 29-31 but lost in the Wild Card round after getting swept 0-2 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The 2021 and 2022 seasons seemed to be a step in the right direction batting above .250 for both, but still not what we were used to seeing in the 2018 and 2019 seasons. In the 2021 season, Yelich moved around the batting order trying to find the right fit, and it was found that he batted best in the lead-off spot. In 88 starts he batted in the number one spot with .267, which was the best out of any other spot he batted that year. On May 11, 2022, Yelich hit for the cycle for the third time in his career against the Reds.
Looking Ahead to Christian Yelich in 2023
With the 2023 Spring Training games just starting in days, Brewers fans wonder if we will ever see the 2018 MVP Christian Yelich, or the 2019 runner-up Christian Yelich. With the Brewers bringing in two power bats: catcher William Contreras and outfielder Jesse Winker, and the projection of great years for both, Wily Adames and Rowdy Tellez, it helps bring the pressure off Yelich to be that go-to guy. Though it is unclear if we will see an MVP-caliber season out of Yelich again, Brewers have found a home for Yelich in the lead-off spot which should boost his confidence at the plate.
