William Contreras is setting his sights to a major award this season after his sensational 2024 season but he wants to slow down.
His manager Pat Murphy confirmed to reporters on Sunday that the Venezuelan catch will attempt to win the Most Valuable Player award in their league. However, the player is also thinking of taking some days off this season to prevent getting worn down the season’s end.
“I think yes,” Contreras said. “I learned that from last year. I didn’t want to take days off last year, but I think maybe a few more days off would be good for me over a full season.”
How many days off does he seek?
“Two. Maybe three.”
Contreras played 155 games last season out of the team’s 162. The 2024 season is by far the best so far in his career.
He batted .281 with 23 home runs and 92 RBIs and was fifth in the National League in walks with 78.
He made the All-Star Game that season and was named to the All-MLB First Team and received the Slugger Award for a second straight year.

Pat Murphy speaks highly of Contreras’ hard work and strength. He is also very appreciative of his dedication to the game and to the team.
However, that is not enough for him to grant the player’s wish to have some days off.
“He’s different than other guys physically,” the manager said. “Incredible strength, incredible condition. Everybody wears down and I think that’s what he did, and it wore on him a bit mentally.”
Murphy also referenced other greats whose levels Contreras wants to reach when it comes to the issue of rest day.
“I think he’s mentally going to be better, so why would you sit him more? When this is a game of Freddie Freeman playing 162 and Yadier Molina catching 140.”
